Dictionaries which explain what words mean give a clear definition of them. A good dictionary also gives more information about words. For instance, it explains how they are pronounced. Usually the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is used for this purpose.
There are also dictionaries which translate words into other languages. These are bilingual dictionaries. When using a dictionary to find out how to say something in another language, one has to be careful to choose the right meaning.
A word like ‘right’ has different meanings in English, for example, ‘correct’ and ‘the opposite of left’. A word like ‘present’ may be used as an adjective, meaning ‘not absent’, as a noun, meaning ‘gift’ or as a verb, meaning ‘give’. Words with different meanings exist in other languages, too. A good dictionary lists all the meanings of words to help people find the meaning that they look for. A complete dictionary also tells you about the origin of words. For example, the words ‘pajamas’, ‘bazaar’ and ‘paradise’ entered English from Persian.

در این نوع سؤال متن را «اسکن» می‌کنیم؛ یعنی دنبال همان واژه‌های جملهٔ ناقص در متن می‌گردیم و جواب را از جملهٔ همان‌جا برمی‌داریم.
۴۷) جملهٔ اول متن: «Dictionaries which explain what words mean give a clear definition of them.» یعنی «فرهنگ‌هایی که معنی واژه‌ها را توضیح می‌دهند، تعریف روشنی از آن‌ها می‌دهند.» تعریف روشنِ «واژه‌ها» داده می‌شود؛ پس «them» به words برمی‌گردد. (شمارهٔ line 1 مربوط به سطرهای برگهٔ چاپی است.)
۴۸) «goal» یعنی هدف. در پاراگراف اول آمده: «Usually the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is used for this purpose.» یعنی «معمولاً الفبای آوانگاری بین‌المللی برای این منظور به کار می‌رود.» «purpose» هم یعنی هدف و منظور؛ پس جواب purpose است.
۴۹) پاراگراف دوم: «There are also dictionaries which translate words into other languages. These are bilingual dictionaries.» فرهنگ‌هایی که واژه‌ها را به زبان دیگر ترجمه می‌کنند bilingual (دوزبانه) هستند.
۵۰) متن برای «right» دو معنی آورده: «‘correct’ and ‘the opposite of left’» یعنی «درست» و «مخالفِ چپ (راست)». پس جواب ۲ (two) است.
۵۱) در جملهٔ «Ali was present in the class yesterday.» (علی دیروز در کلاس حاضر بود)، «present» بعد از «was» آمده و صفت است. متن می‌گوید «present» وقتی صفت باشد یعنی «not absent» (غایب نبودن، حاضر). پس جواب not absent است. (در نقش اسم یعنی «هدیه» و در نقش فعل یعنی «دادن، ارائه کردن».)
۵۲) جملهٔ آخر متن: «the words ‘pajamas’, ‘bazaar’ and ‘paradise’ entered English from Persian.» یعنی واژه‌های «پیژامه»، «بازار» و «پردیس» از فارسی وارد انگلیسی شده‌اند؛ پس جواب Persian است.
